In a Space.com article published August 31, 2010, we learn that Armadillo Aerospace will be conducting three test launches at Spaceport America.

Armadillo "Mod" in flight at the 2008 Lunar X-Prize Level 2 competition.

"Armadillo said it will use the [NASA grant] money to make three unmanned launches of its Super-Mod vehicle from Spaceport America in New Mexico. Two flights, both aiming for an altitude of about 9 miles (15 km), will take place this fall. The third will target a maximum altitude of 25 miles (40 km) or so and should occur this winter."

Armadillo, based in Mesquite, Texas, is developing vertical launch and landing vehicles. Armadillo is no stranger to New Mexico. In 2006 they flew an attempt at the Wirefly X-Prize cup Lunar lander Challenge in Las Cruces. They failed the test, but came back in 2007, and again in 2008 when they finally qualified for the $350,000 Level 1 prize.

They returned again in 2008 to compete for the Level 2 challenge. This time there was competition. Although the flight was judged a success, competitor TrueZer0 won first place. Armadillo won a second place prize of $500,000.
