The NASA Student Launch Program at the Marshall Space flight center has arranged with FLARE and SMRA to conduct an L1 certification launch on July 23rd at the SMRA launch site in Alamogordo.

In April 2011, Mr. Eddie Jeffries with the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, contacted FLARE President Thomas Kindig to inquire about the possibility of conducting the annual "away" workshop and HPR launch in Las Cruces.

The NASA Student Launch Program (NSLP) conducts two workshops each year for teachers and mentors who serve the student groups who participate in these programs. One is conducted in Huntsville, the second in another part of the country. This will be the first workshop in New Mexico. The actual workshop will take place at the Hotel Encanto in Las Cruces on Wednesday July 20 through Friday July 22nd. The workshop activities will include a tour of Spaceport America on Friday.

We have been working with Teresa Shurtz of the Alabama Space Grant Consortium (ALSGC) to coordinate this activity. We are advised that a limited number of volunteers may request a seat on Spaceport America tour on Friday. The bus will leave from the Hotel Encanto at 7:00 AM on Friday and return at 3:30 PM. The tour will include lunch at the Elephant Butte Inn. Please contact Thomas directly if you wish to sign up for this tour.

The launch will be conducted on Saturday July 23rd. We are expecting about twenty participants who will do NAR L1 certification flights. The rockets will all fly about 2800' and have a 30" parachute deployed by motor ejection. All rockets are madcow fiberglass ARCAS with 38mm motor tubes and flying on CTI H125s. Daniel Cavendar, instructor, will be launching a "Jake" on an M3400. He anticipates an apogee around 10,000'. There are five L2 certified mentors doing the workshop. They will also be on hand to perform safety check-in and chute packing, plus witness certifications. Our L1 or higher volunteers are welcome to assist.

Setup will begin on Friday afternoon, as the ALSGC has arranged to have tables, chairs, large tent, wash station, and porta-potties delivered. We will need a volunteer to camp at the site to guard the rental property.

At present we have 12 volunteers to support the activity. We are seeking additional volunteers and resources from nearby clubs. In particular we are looking for additional launch rails (small for the L1 rockets). We currently have 4 small rails and one 12' large rail. I ordered three additional small rails, 8' from Mcmaster-carr and expect to have them ready before Saturday.

Our volunteers are also welcome to launch rockets, up to 12,686' AGL. Please let us know if you wish to do this, so that we can apply for any needed waivers. Here is the general schedule for the event.

  • 07/22/11 – 12:00 ::: Open range gate for delivery of rental equipment. Conduct positioning and setup of equipment.
  • Night ::: Guard rental equipment.
  • 07/23/11 – 07:00 ::: Open range for setup of launch racks and support equipment.
  • 07:00 – 08:30 ::: Organize duties, RSO, and fight/recovery teams.
  • 08:30 – 09:45 ::: Test launch gear and radio equipment.
  • 10:00–10:30 ::: Participants arrive on site. Introductions, safety and operations briefing. Q & A.
  • 10:30–14:00 ::: Launch operations.
  • 14:30–15:00 ::: Paperwork wrap-up and Awards
  • 15:00–? ::: Site break-down.

It is probable that we will meet at a restaurant in town for a group dinner around 17:00.
